Explosion in junk shop in Jorhat, Assam, two dead, two injured

Two people, including a girl, were killed and two others were seriously injured in a blast in Assam’s Jorhat district on Saturday. Jorhat Senior Superintendent of Police Shubhrajit Bora said that the blast took place in a rented house of a scrap dealer in Rajamaidam New Colony of the town, in which two people died on the spot. He said that the injured have been admitted to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital in critical condition.

The SSP said that the cause of the explosion is yet to be known and a forensic team has reached the spot to collect evidence. He said that six people have been detained for questioning and the entire matter is being investigated. The police officer said that the deceased have been identified as Noor Mohammad (40) and Naina Begum (8).

The incident took place inside a rented house/scrap material shop in Rajamaidam New Colony of Jorhat city. Two people died in the blast that occurred around 3:30 pm. At the same time, two children/women are seriously injured. The injured include a 7-year-old daughter and a woman from the neighbourhood. All were admitted to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, where the condition of one girl is still said to be critical.

The explosion was so strong that the walls of the room were damaged, a small crater was formed on the floor and the body parts of a dead body were scattered. However, no fire occurred. Initial suspicion was of LPG cylinder blast, but the police rejected it. Police suspect that the explosion may have occurred while tampering with the fire extinguisher or hitting it with a hammer.

Being a scrap dealer there could have been flammable/hazardous materials in the house. No sign of terrorists or bombs was found. Police and forensic team have started investigation. The incident took place just before the Assam Assembly elections, causing panic in the area.
