Former Indian cricket team legend Ravichandran Ashwin has signed with the San Francisco Unicorns team for the upcoming fourth season of Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026. With this he has become the first Indian player to participate in this competition. Ashwin retired from international cricket in December 2024. In the year 2025, he was last seen playing Indian Premier League (IPL) for Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Ashwin’s first league outside IPL

Joining the San Francisco Unicorns is Ashwin’s first involvement in a T20 league outside the IPL. Earlier, he was supposed to play for Sydney Thunder in the 2025-26 Big Bash League (BBL), but due to a knee injury, he had to undergo surgery and had to withdraw his name. He said, “We stand in an era of sports where it is constantly struggling and trying to establish itself on the global level.” This 6-team league will start from June 18 and its matches will be played in Texas, Los Angeles and Oakland, while the final will be held on July 18 at the Oakland Coliseum.

Ashwin played 333 T-20 matches and was successful in taking 317 wickets in 329 innings at an average of 26.94. His economy was 7.11. He took 4 wickets 4 times and his best performance was 4/8. Ashwin has played 65 matches for the Indian team and has taken 72 wickets in 65 innings at an average of 23.22. He took 4 wicket hauls twice and his best performance was 4/8.

Ashwin started his IPL career in the year 2009. He has taken 187 wickets in 221 matches at an average of 30.22 and economy rate of 7.20.
