Chip factory to be inaugurated in Gujarat next week

What is the news?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Keynes Semicon’s Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) factory in Sanand, Gujarat on March 31. The Union Cabinet had approved this plant worth Rs 3,300 crore under the India Semiconductor Mission in September 2024. It is expected to produce about 60 lakh chips per day. Gujarat has emerged as a leading state in the semiconductor sector, with 4 out of 10 projects approved under the semiconductor programme.

Sanand is becoming leader in semiconductor sector

The inauguration of Keynes Semicon’s new unit comes at a time of rapid industrial transformation in Sanand, which was once the center of automobile production and is now emerging as a semiconductor hub. Earlier this year, Micron Technology had inaugurated a large unit in this area. CG Semi has also commissioned another unit, making Sanand a key player in India’s semiconductor ambitions.

Chips will be tested in the factory

The Gujarat government has said that the KENS facility will boost the semiconductor ecosystem by adding OSAT capabilities. It is an important part of the semiconductor value chain, which involves testing and packaging chips before they are shipped to the market. Prime Minister Modi had earlier highlighted India’s rapid progress in this sector and cited the example of Micron’s project, which was completed in less than 900 days.
