What is news?

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has launched the National Rare blood donation registry. The objective of this initiative is to help patients with rare and abnormal blood types, which require repeated blood offering. The registry was developed by the National Institute of Immunometry (NIIH), Mumbai. It will be paired with E-bloodstream, which is currently a platform providing information about blood availability.

Blood banks will also benefit

Integrating the rare blood donor registry with the E-Blood Class will make it easier for people with rare blood group to find blood from blood banks. This will also help blood banks to manage their stock and blood donors through a centralized system. ICMR-Center for Research Management and Control of Hemoglobinopathy (CRHCM), Director of Nagpur, Dr. Manisha Madkikar shared this information about this important development.

Blood transfusion

Due to this, there is more demand for blood transfusion

According to the Central Drug Standards Control Organization (CDSCO), India has more than 4,000 licensed blood banks in more than 1.4 billion population. High demand for blood transfusion is seen in the country due to excessive circulation of blood diseases and complications during pregnancy. Highlighting the need for such an initiative, Dr. Madkiker said, “Due to Thalassemia, 1 to 1.5 lakh patients require frequent blood transfusion.”
