There is a dispute over the voter list’s information inspection in Bihar

What is news?

The assembly elections are to be held in Bihar later this year. Earlier, the Election Commission has started the process of voter intensive revision (SIR). Through this, the voter list is being revised. The Commission has sought several documents from the voters, on the basis of which it will be decided whether their name will be in the voter list or not. Questions are also arising on this process and politics is also happening a lot. Let’s understand the whole matter.

Process

What is sir?

On 24 June, the Election Commission announced the SIR in Bihar. This work is to be done from 25 June to 26 July. The Commission has asked voters to submit separate documents based on the year of birth. If this is not done, the voter’s name can be removed from the list. The Commission says that the voter list has not been reviewed since 2003, so this is being done.

Categories

How many categories of voters have the Commission created?

The Commission has created 3 categories. First- Those born before 1 July 1987, they will only have to present their own documents. Secondly, those who were born between July 1, 1987 to December 2, 2004, will have to present the documents of themselves and one of the parents. Thirdly, voters born after December 2, 2004 will have to present the documents of themselves and both their parents.

Document

Which documents have been sought from voters?

The Election Commission has sought 11 documents from voters. Birth certificate, passport, high school result, permanent residence certificate, forest rights certificate, caste certificate, name, family register, land or housing allocation letter, any identity card of employees or pensioners of the central or state government, government or post office or LIC or LIC or Government Company identity card or certificate. These people will not have to submit any documents

The Commission said that those whose names are in the 2003 voter list will not have to submit any documents. Such people only have to verify their details from the list of 2003 and submit the filled calculation form. The Commission also said that whose name is not in the 2003 list, he can use the respective fraction of the electoral roll instead of giving any other documents to his mother or father.

Question

Why are the questions arising on the Election Commission?

After giving first information on June 24, the Commission has issued different notifications in this regard several times. Repeated rules are being changed regarding documents. Political analyst Yogendra Yadav said on this, “There will be more such orders or changes right now. The Commission is not accepting it, but is calling it an explanation. It is impossible to fulfill the terms of the Documents which are imposing the terms of the documents. The commission cannot withdraw the order, so changes will continue.”

Politics

Opposition also raised questions on the decision

Opposition coalition India parties have met Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar regarding the decision. These parties say that this is a conspiracy to take away the rights from poor, Dalit, backward and minority voters. Tejashwi Yadav described it as an attack on the foundation of democracy and described a step filled with confusion, uncertainty and repression. Some BJP allies including Congress, Asaduddin Owaisi have also objected
