New Delhi: While replying to the discussion on the no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Amit Shah lashed out at the opposition. His target was opposition leader Rahul Gandhi. Apart from accusing Rahul Gandhi of his behavior inside the House and not following the rules, the details of his attendance in the House were also presented. Meanwhile, when the ruckus started from the opposition side, Amit Shah said in a loud voice – Listen, now we will have to listen.
Who will decide who gets to speak?
Amit Shah said, “The Leader of the Opposition complains that he is not being allowed to speak, the voice of the Leader of the Opposition is being suppressed. I want to ask him, who will decide who from your party should speak? The Speaker? No, it is for you to decide. But when the opportunity comes to speak, you are seen in Germany, in England. Then he complains. Congress MPs spoke for 157 hours and 55 minutes in the 18th Lok Sabha. How much did the Leader of the Opposition speak? Why didn’t you speak? No one can stop you. This is being done to defame the Lok Sabha.
Listen, now you have to listen
Amit Shah said that he did not participate in even a single discussion on the President’s motion of thanks in the 16th Lok Sabha in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018. When opposition MPs protested, Amit Shah said angrily that listen, now we will have to listen. After this, Amit Shah presented further details and said that they say that we are not allowed to speak.
Traveling abroad during the budget session or any special session
Amit Shah said, “In the winter session 2025, he (Rahul Gandhi) was on a visit to Germany, in the budget session 2025, he was on a visit to Vietnam, in the budget session 2023, he was on a visit to England. In the budget session 2018, he was on a visit to Singapore and Malaysia and in the monsoon session 2020, he was on a foreign trip. In the budget session 2015, he was on a foreign trip. It is a terrible coincidence that whenever the budget session or any special session comes, he is on a foreign trip. When we are on a trip, we are not allowed to speak. How will a person who is in Germany, England or Singapore speak here? There is no provision for video conferencing.”
If you talk off topic, you will have to interrupt.
Amit Shah said, “Yesterday KC Venugopal raised the issue that the leader of the opposition was stopped and interrupted 38-40 times. After being interrupted once by the Speaker, if you say the same thing the second time, what option is left for the Speaker. When Rajnath Singh said that you cannot quote an unpublished book or magazine. No one has the right to speak in the Lok Sabha by quoting it. But if you speak on the same topic, you will have to be interrupted.”
We did not suppress the voice of the opposition
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, “I want to clarify that we never worked to suppress the voice of the opposition… The work of suppressing the voice of the opposition was done in 1975 when the entire opposition was put in jail. That is called suppressing the voice of the opposition.”
Attempt to destroy BJP’s image
Amit Shah said, “A campaign is being made all over the country to tarnish the image of BJP that they (opposition) are not allowed to speak but I want to say to those who are making this effort that this does not tarnish the image of BJP because who will speak, when will he speak, how much will he speak and what will he say, it is the speaker who decides not the ruling party.”
Anyone who doesn’t follow the rules should have their mic switched off.
Amit Shah said, “Some members said that this (no-confidence motion) has come because of the mike, the mike is switched off. Now when Giriraj Singh was also standing and speaking against Pappu Yadav, his mike was switched off. Despite being a minister, the mike is switched off. This House is run by rules, the one who does not follow the rules and discipline, his mike will be switched off and should be switched off.”
