The death toll due to drinking adulterated milk in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh has increased to 16. Similarly, 3 other people are undergoing treatment in hospitals of Rajamahendravaram. The incident dates back to mid-February, when several customers reportedly fell seriously ill due to adulterated milk supplied in parts of Lalcheruvu. The incident has raised concerns about food safety standards in the region.

How did this matter start?

This matter formally came to light on 22 February. At that time residents of Chowdeswaranagar and Swarupnagar areas of Lalacheruvu had complained of serious health problems including vomiting, stomach pain, inability to urinate and acute kidney failure after consuming locally supplied milk. After that many people had to be admitted to the hospital. After that, the health department officials started investigating this entire matter.

The police had registered a case on February 22 itself under section 194 of the Indian Justice Code (BNS), which deals with unnatural deaths, following a complaint by Tadi Seetharamaiah, son of one of the deceased. Police said that between February 16 and March 21, 20 people were admitted to various hospitals. Of these, 16 died, 3 are undergoing treatment and one patient has completely recovered.

Police stopped milk supply after finding the source

The investigators identified a dairy unit located at Naraspuram village in Korukonda mandal of East Godavari as the suspected source. Milk from this unit was being supplied to more than 100 families in the area. Upon suspicion, milk supply from the unit was immediately stopped. The milk vendor was then taken into custody by the police, while forensic teams investigated the premises and collected necessary evidence and cracked the case.
