Anna University case, professor was commenting on ‘innerwear’ and ‘periods’ from student

A professor from Chennai’s prestigious Anna University has been arrested after serious allegations of sexual harassment and stalking were made by a student. The student lodged her complaint with the Chennai Police Commissioner’s office, in which she made shocking revelations.

According to the student, Professor A. Gyanvel Babu it all started with him in the second year. When the professor came to know about the financial condition of the student, he started contacting her on the pretext of getting her an internship. It is alleged that the professor used to call the student after 10 pm. During conversations, he used to make objectionable comments on very personal topics like her innerwear, periods and marriage.

The student said that even after being blocked, the professor continued trying to contact her through her friends. She later approached the college’s internal complaints committee under the sexual harassment prevention mechanism. The student has requested a secure investigation to encourage other victims to come forward and share their experiences, so that other female students who have been victims of similar harassment can come forward.

Professor arrested from Tirunelveli

A special team of Chennai Police has arrested the accused professor from Tirunelveli. Police have registered a case under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, 1998 and section 78 (stalking) of the Indian Code of Justice (BNS). Following the growing protests and registration of FIR, the Anna University administration has suspended the professor with immediate effect. After this incident, students staged a massive protest in the university campus. The students allege that no concrete action was taken on the previous complaints.

Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai has raised questions on the functioning of the internal complaints committee of the institute. At the same time, TVK Party has also demanded from the state government to ensure the safety of women in educational institutions and an impartial investigation into the matter.
