Swami Vivekananda, born on 12 January 1863, had propagated Indian spirituality all over the world with his profound knowledge. Today is the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, who showed the dream of independent India to the youth of the country at a very young age and made his knowledge known to the whole world. Narendranath Dutt (Swami Vivekananda), born Vishwanath Dutt in a Kayastha family of Gourmohan Mukherjee Street, Kolkata, is known as the main propagator of Hinduism.
Vivekananda has been such a monk of India, whose messages force people to follow him even today and his followers are seen not only in the country but in every corner of the world and a monk whose one statement was enough to convince the whole world. Representatives of all the religions of the world had come to the Parliament of World Religions held in Chicago, America in 1893 and Swami Vivekananda was representing Sanatan Dharma in it. Swamiji gave such a memorable speech that the incredible spiritual heritage and knowledge of India rang a bell. The day of 12 January is dedicated to the name of Swami Vivekananda and is celebrated as Youth Day.
Who was the second Indian speaker at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in 1893?
One of the most special moments of Swami Vivekananda’s life was his historic speech given at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago on September 11, 1893, which is still discussed today. But very few people would know that he was not the only person to represent India on that global platform.
- Veerchand Raghavji Gandhi, a scholar of Jain philosophy, spoke passionately about Jainism, non-violence and moral life. He won widespread praise for his intellectual depth.
- Another Indian representative, Brahmo Samaj leader Pratap Chandra Majumdar, presented India’s reformist spiritual ideas. He highlighted the synergy between reason, faith and modern thinking.
What did Swami Vivekananda say in his Chicago speech 125 years ago?
Here are the main excerpts from the historical speech-
Dear sisters and brothers!
My heart is filled with immense joy at your warm and hearty welcome. I thank you on behalf of the world’s most ancient saint tradition. I thank you on behalf of the mother of all religions and express my gratitude to you on behalf of millions and crores of Hindus of all castes and sects. I am also thankful to some of the speakers who said from this forum that the idea of tolerance has spread in the world from India, a country in the Far East. I am proud to belong to a religion that has taught the world the lessons of tolerance and universal acceptance.
We not only believe in universal toleration, but we accept all religions of the world as true. I am proud to belong to a country that has given refuge to the troubled and persecuted people of all nations and religions on this earth. I am proud to say that we keep in our hearts the sacred memories of those Israelites whose religious places were destroyed by Roman invaders and who then took refuge in South India.
I am proud to belong to a religion which has sheltered and is still nurturing the great people of Zoroastrianism. Brothers, I would like to recite to you a few lines of a shloka, which I have memorized and repeated since my childhood and which is repeated by millions of people every day.
Ruchianaam vaichitriadjukutilnanapathjusham. Nrināmeko gamyastvamsi payasamarnav iv. Meaning: Just as different rivers originating from different sources finally meet in the sea, in the same way man chooses different paths as per his wish.
They may appear straight or crooked, but they all lead to God. The present conference, which is one of the most sacred gatherings ever held, is a testimony to the principle enunciated in the Gita that ‘Whoever comes to me, no matter how he is, I reach him.’ No matter what path people choose, they reach me in the end.”
