In Assam, the opposition party Congress is facing the problem of defection. In such a situation, it may have to face a lot of difficulties in challenging BJP in the upcoming assembly elections. Congress is out of power since 2016. It will have to counter the strong organizational base of the BJP, the active leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the development and welfare schemes launched by the current BJP government.

Who will Congress benefit from?

If we analyze the situation of Congress in Assam, the anti-incumbency wave in the state may go in favor of Congress. The party may benefit from the support of minority voters, especially Bengali-speaking Muslims. Let us tell you that in 2024, the ruling BJP had given its full strength in support of its candidate. Despite this, Gaurav Gogoi’s victory from Jorhat Lok Sabha seat by a huge margin and this time Congress again presenting him as the chief ministerial face, will boost the morale of the party.

Many leaders left Congress

In the last decade, Congress faced many setbacks in Assam. Many leaders including current Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma left the alliance and joined BJP. The latest setback was the joining of former state president Bhupen Bora and three other MLAs into the saffron party. The lack of a united organizational structure in the Congress may also go against it, especially at the grassroots level. This is very clear from the change of sides of tea garden workers during the assembly and parliamentary elections held since 2014. These laborers were once an important vote bank of Congress, but now their inclination has shifted towards BJP.

opportunity for congress

This is an opportunity for Congress to take advantage of the anti-incumbency wave and get the mandate in its favor. The party can also take advantage of the disgruntled elements present in the ruling NDA alliance and include them in its camp. Continuous departure of prominent leaders and workers from the party remains a threat to the Congress, which has a negative impact. The organizational and administrative machinery of the ruling NDA will also pose a challenge to the Congress in Assam.
