Guwahati: Sushant Vishwa Sharma, brother of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma and SSP of Barpeta, has been transferred. This major change in the police department of the state has been made just before the assembly elections. Sushant Vishwa Sharma has now been made the Senior SSP of CID (Crime against Women and Children). In his place, Pushkin Jain will be the new SSP of Barpeta. Guwahati Deputy Commissioner of Police (Intelligence) Harekrishna Nath has been made SSP of CID (White Collar Crime), and will be replaced by Hiranya Kumar Barman.
Pranjal Barua made DSP of Sadiya
Basistha’s Assistant Police Commissioner Pranjal Barua has been made the DSP of Sadiya. STF DSP Satyendra Singh Hazari will replace him. Sadiya’s DSP Naimuddin has been made DSP (Security) of Charaideo while the current officer there Mrinal Kumar Das has now been made DSP (Security). Vigilance and Anti-Corruption DSP Rituparna Gogoi has been made the DSP of Tinsukia. Amar Jyoti Saikia will replace him. All these changes have been made by the orders of Additional Chief Secretary, Home and Political Department, Ajay Tiwari.
When can elections be held in Assam?
Assembly elections in Assam may be held in March-April 2026. The tenure of the current assembly ends in May 2026. In the last assembly elections held in the state in 2021, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA alliance had registered a landslide victory. In the NDA, BJP had won 60 seats, Assam Gana Parishad had won 9 and United People’s Party Liberal had won 6 seats, thus giving the alliance a total of 75 seats. The Congress-led Mahajot had secured 50 seats, leaving the Congress at 29 and the AIUDF at 16. The NDA formed the government in the state for the second consecutive time, which was a first for any party or alliance other than the Congress in Assam.
