Guwahati: Election campaign is in full swing in Bokakhat constituency. Six people are contesting from this seat. In this, Atul Bora of Assam Gana Parishad and Hari Prasad Saikia of Raijor Dal are prominent. Apart from these, Vivekananda Rajowar of Gondwana Republic Party and three independent candidates are also in the fray. At present the MLA here is Atul Bora. Voting on this seat will be held on April 9 and counting of votes will take place on May 4.
Bokakhat has seen many major political changes in the last few decades. There has traditionally been a contest between Congress and BJP in this area and Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) has also been dominant here at different times. While the Congress ruled this seat for most of the 1990s and early 2000s, the political equation here changed completely after 2016.
Electoral history of Bokakhat
In the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, AGP candidate Atul Bora won the Bokakhat seat by a margin of 45,181 votes (38.46%). He received 72,930 votes, which was 60.56% of the total votes. He defeated independent candidate Pranab Dole, who received 27,749 votes (23.04%). Independent candidate Jiten Gogoi finished third with 5,550 votes (4.61%). Earlier in the 2016 elections also, Atul Bora was elected MLA from here. This time he is in the fray to score a hat-trick of victories.
