In a major crackdown against wildlife crime, the Odisha Forest Department has arrested 39 poachers from Similipal Wildlife Sanctuary in Mayurbhanj district. This entire action was possible with the help of surveillance cameras equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Activities of poachers captured in AI cameras
According to the information, the activities of these poachers were captured in AI cameras inside the South Division of Similipal Sanctuary. These state-of-the-art cameras installed in the forest do 24-hour real-time monitoring. As soon as the cameras recorded suspicious activity, the system made their exact location and time immediately available to forest officials.
39 hunters arrested after encircling the forest
After the alert received from the AI system, the team of Special Tiger Protection Force and Forest Department immediately conducted a joint operation. A cordon and raid was conducted inside the forest, in which a total of 39 people were arrested.
Huge quantity of weapons and explosive material recovered
During the raid, a huge quantity of weapons and explosive materials were recovered from the accused. The seized items included nine country-made guns, 20 bows, a large number of edged weapons, substantial quantity of explosives and several equipment used for hunting. From this it is being estimated that preparations were being made for a large-scale hunt in the forest.
AI played a big role
It is being told that all the arrested accused are residents of Udala police station area near the sanctuary. Accurate information received from AI based surveillance system played an important role in foiling this big poaching operation.
Big step towards protection of wildlife
The Forest Department has initiated legal action against the accused under relevant wildlife protection laws. Further investigation into the matter is ongoing. This action is being considered a major success towards the protection of wildlife, where with the help of modern technology and alert administration, a major incident was averted in time.
