During the hearing regarding increasing air pollution in Delhi-NCR, the Supreme Court made an important comment. Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant said that in today’s time the car has become more of a status symbol than necessary. People have almost given up using bicycles and are saving money to buy cars.
‘Having multiple cars in the same family is a major reason for increasing pollution’
This comment came when a lawyer argued in the court that having multiple cars in the same family is a major reason for increasing pollution. Responding to this, CJI said that earlier people used to travel by bicycle, but now the situation has changed.
This was said when the hearing of Bihar SIR case started immediately after the hearing of the case related to Delhi pollution. During this, senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, appearing for the Center for Air Quality Management (CAQM), also said that a major reason for pollution is the increasing number of cars. He told that many houses have not one, but two or more cars.
‘Rich people should use electric vehicles’
CJI Surya Kant said that rich people should give up cars. If people adopt good electric vehicles instead of expensive and high fuel consuming vehicles, then pollution can be reduced. He clearly indicated that people will have to change their habits, only then the air can become clean.
Government should make long term plan – Supreme Court
Let us tell you that earlier on December 17, the Supreme Court had heard about the increasing pollution in Delhi-NCR. The court ordered NHAI and MCD to close the 9 toll plazas on the Delhi border for a short time or shift them to some other place. The Supreme Court said that this will reduce traffic jams and control pollution. The bench led by CJI Surya Kant said that air pollution occurs again and again every winter. Therefore CAQM should reconsider its old policy and make a strong long term plan to deal with air pollution.
