New Delhi: Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said sleeper coach buses will be manufactured only by government-recognized automobile companies. Gadkari said that to prevent the increasing incidents of fire in sleeper buses, the government has decided that sleeper coach buses will be manufactured only by automobile companies or facilities approved by the central government.
It is mandatory to install these security features
Nitin Gadkari also said that sleeper coach buses currently in operation should be fitted with necessary safety features, including fire detection systems, emergency lighting and driver sleep indicators. Additionally, all existing buses must have emergency exits and hatches to ensure the safety of passengers.
This should be the standard for sleeper coach buses
Sleeper coach buses must comply with the AIS-052 bus body code, which is a mandatory national standard that meets structural, design and safety requirements. This code is required to ensure that all bus bodies manufactured in India meet high standards of passenger safety. The government aims to significantly improve safety for both drivers and passengers.
Several fire accidents in sleeper coach buses
In the last six months alone, sleeper coach buses have been involved in six major fire accidents. 145 people lost their lives in these tragic incidents. Inspections often find emergency windows missing or damaged. There is a complete lack of fire safety equipment and employees are not properly trained to deal with emergencies.
Road accident victims will get cashless treatment
At the same time, Road, Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari also said that Prime Minister Modi will soon launch a cashless medical treatment scheme for road accident victims. Under this scheme, victims will get cashless treatment up to Rs 1.5 lakh per victim for a maximum period of 7 days from the date of the accident. At the same time, cash rewards will also be given to the good people who take the victims to the hospital.
Nitin Gadkari said that the central government is working on bringing vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication technology to curb road accidents. With the help of V2V communication technology, vehicles will be able to communicate directly with each other, giving the driver real-time alerts about the speed, position, acceleration, braking information of other vehicles nearby and vehicles in blind spots. This will enable the driver to take necessary steps in time and the chances of accidents will be reduced.
