Soon the Chardham Yatra of Uttarakhand is going to become easier. Devotees will not have to make long and tiring bus-taxi journeys. Elderly people can also prepare to go on Chardham Yatra with ease. Indian Railways has prepared its complete blue print. The government has given a big update regarding this in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
What did the Railway Minister tell?
The government said that a new rail line project named Rishikesh-Karnprayag has been approved for rail connectivity to Chardham and survey has been completed for expanding rail connectivity to Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav gave this information in written reply to the questions of BJP MPs Anil Baluni and Ajay Bhatt.
Rs 40384 crore will be spent
The minister said that three new lines of total length of 216 km have been approved in Uttarakhand at a cost of Rs 40,384 crore, of which 16 km has been commissioned and an expenditure of Rs 19,898 crore has been incurred till March 2025. He said, “The Rishikesh-Karnprayag new rail line project (125 km) has been approved to provide rail connectivity to Chardham. Survey for extending rail connectivity to Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath has been completed. However, the route of the project lies near the main central part of the Himalayas, which is a highly vulnerable area from earthquake point of view.
What will be the route?
The route of this rail project passes through Dehradun, Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal, Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts of Uttarakhand and will connect the religious and tourist places of Devprayag and Karnaprayag to Rishikesh and the national capital through rail connectivity.
How much work has been done so far?
- Most of the route of the railway project passes through tunnels. The project involves construction of 16 main tunnels of 104 km length and 12 ‘escape’ tunnels of approximately 98 km length.
- So far, main tunnels of 99 km length and 9 ‘escape’ tunnels of more than 94 km length have been completed.
