On the occasion of Pongal, the Tamil Nadu government on Thursday launched a massive welfare scheme to provide cash and gift packs to 2.22 crore ration cardholders across the state. Chief Minister MK Stalin formally launched the scheme from a ration shop in Alandur area of Nazarethpettai, Chennai. Under the scheme, each beneficiary family will be given one kilogram of raw rice, one kilogram of sugar, one sugarcane and ₹3,000 cash assistance.
How to get Pongal gift?
According to officials, the distribution process has been started from Thursday itself, and beneficiaries can collect the Pongal packs from ration shops as per their scheduled time slots. Officials of the Cooperative, Food and Civil Supplies departments said that all preparations have been completed. The supply of rice and sugar has been delivered to all ration shops, while 50 to 80 percent of the required sugarcane has reached the shops. Arrangements have been made to send the remaining quantity quickly through the district administration, so that fresh sugarcane can reach every beneficiary on time.
Employees will not get holiday at the end of the festival
Some stocks of dhotis and sarees distributed in previous years are still left in government warehouses. Officials said that in places where there is demand, the stock will be made available to the shops for redistribution. Police forces have been deployed to manage the crowd, especially in areas where there are multiple ration shops in the same area. Employees have been instructed not to take leave till the end of the festival so that there is no hindrance in distribution.
Shops will open at 6 am in hilly areas
Keeping in mind the people who go to work early in the morning in the hilly areas, ration shops will be opened from 6 am. The process of token distribution was completed on Wednesday. Beneficiaries who have not received the token have been asked to contact their respective ration shops and collect the Pongal gift pack on the scheduled date.
Earlier Rs 1000 were given
It is worth noting that till last year a cash amount of Rs 1000 was given, but in view of the assembly elections to be held this year, this time this amount has been increased to Rs 3000. MK Stalin’s son and Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin has also given Pongal gift to the people in his assembly constituency Chepauk-Triplicane.
