New Delhi: According to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), about 32 per cent of sitting Rajya Sabha MPs have declared criminal cases against themselves, while 14 per cent are billionaires. This report is based on the analysis of affidavits of 229 out of 233 Rajya Sabha MPs. One seat in Jharkhand is still vacant, while the affidavits of three MPs were not available. The analysis also includes 37 recently elected members.
Criminal case against 73 Rajya Sabha MPs
According to the ADR report, out of 229 MPs, 73 MPs (32 per cent) have declared criminal cases against themselves, of which 36 MPs (16 per cent) face serious charges. One MP has a case of murder declared, four have cases of attempt to murder and three have cases related to crimes against women.
Party wise, out of 99 BJP MPs, 27 have criminal cases registered against them. Cases are registered against 12 out of 28 Congress MPs. There itself. Four out of 13 TMC MPs and four out of 10 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MPs have declared criminal cases against themselves. Three MPs each from CPI(M) and Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) have informed about criminal cases against them.

The ADR report also found that 31 MPs (14 percent) have total assets worth billions of rupees. These include six MPs from BJP and five from Congress. Four YSRCP MPs, two AAP MPs, two BRS MPs and three NCP MPs have declared assets worth more than Rs 100 crore. The average wealth of a Rajya Sabha MP is Rs 120.69 crore.
BRS MP Bandi Partha Sarathi has declared the highest assets worth around Rs 5,300 crore. After this, Aam Aadmi Party’s Rajendra Gupta (Rs 5,053 crore) and YSRCP’s Ayodhya Rami Reddy Ala (Rs 2,577 crore) are in second and third place.
These are the poorest MPs of Rajya Sabha
AAP MP Sant Balbir Singh is the poorest, with assets worth around Rs 3 lakh. He is followed by Manipur’s Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba, who has assets worth around Rs 5 lakh, and then TMC’s Prakash Chik Baraik, who has assets worth around Rs 9 lakh.
The average asset of a member of Rajya Sabha has been estimated at Rs 120.69 crore. In case of BJP, the average assets per MP is Rs 28.29 crore while for Congress it is Rs 128.61 crore, for Trinamool it is Rs 17.70 crore and for Aam Aadmi Party it is Rs 574.09 crore. Other parties include YSRCP (Rs 522.63 crore), Samajwadi Party (Rs 399.71 crore), Biju Janata Dal (Rs 105.63 crore) and DMK (Rs 11.90 crore).
