Cyber fraud happening in the name of e-challan

What is the news?

These days, cyber fraudsters are making people victims of fraud in the name of e-challan. The government has warned Android users that a dangerous malware campaign is going on, which is targeting people through fake messages. In these messages, links are sent with the threat of traffic challan. Users are tricked into downloading fake applications that look like the real app, putting their financial information at risk.

How does this fake malware work?

In this fraud, a message is sent to the users that their challan has been deducted and a link is given to view or download it. This link downloads a fake app, which looks like the real government app. After installation, this app inserts real malware in the name of update. After this, it keeps working secretly in the background and the user does not even know.

Data theft and banking threat

This malware asks for various permissions from the phone, such as reading messages, accessing calls and taking permission to run continuously. Through this, fraudsters can capture your OTP and access banking information. Password and other important information is also taken from the user through a fake screen. Due to this, money can be withdrawn without your knowledge and the entire phone can also come under the control of the fraudster, which further increases the danger.

How to stay safe and what to do?

The government has advised to check the information of any challan only from the official website. Never download unknown links or files and keep the setting of installing apps from unknown sources turned off. If you find any suspicious message, delete it immediately. If the phone seems infected, turn off the internet, remove apps, change the password and UPI PIN and keep an eye on bank activities. Report any fraud immediately on helpline 1930 or the portal.
