What is the news?
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) protested on Monday evening with strict disciplinary action against students who raised controversial slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. These students had taken this step after the Supreme Court on Monday canceled the bail of 2020 Delhi riots accused Umar Khalid and Sharjeel. JNU has also lodged an FIR against the guilty students.
JNU administration issued statement
JNU administration wrote on Twitter, ‘JNU administration has pledged to take the strictest action against the students who raised objectionable slogans against Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah. FIR has been registered in this matter. The statement further reads, ‘Universities are centers of innovation and new ideas and cannot be allowed to turn into laboratories of spreading hatred. Freedom of speech and expression is a fundamental right.
What action will be taken against the guilty students?
The JNU administration further wrote, ‘Even though students have fundamental rights under freedom of speech and expression, any form of violence, unlawful conduct or anti-national activity will not be tolerated under any circumstances.’ The statement further reads, ‘Disciplinary action will be taken against all guilty students involved in this incident, including immediate suspension, expulsion and permanent ban from the university.’
JNU administration had taken cognizance of the incident
On Tuesday morning, the JNU administration had said that the competent authorities have taken serious cognizance of the incident and have directed the university’s security wing to fully cooperate with the police investigation. The administration had also said that such sloganeering violates the JNU code of conduct and has the potential to seriously disrupt public order, campus harmony and the safety and security environment of the university and the country.
The report considered the protest a premeditated conspiracy
A report submitted by JNU’s Chief Security Officer concluded that the slogans raised on the campus were a deliberate and calculated strategy. This cannot be considered a spontaneous expression of protest.
Video of protest went viral on social media
A video of this protest is going viral on social media, in which students were seen raising slogans like ‘Modi-Shah’s grave will be dug on JNU soil’. However, JNU Students’ Union president Aditi Mishra told PTI, “Every year students hold protests to condemn the violence that took place on the JNU campus on January 5, 2020. All the slogans raised were ideological and were not a personal attack on anyone. They were not directed at anyone.”
Supreme Court had rejected the bail plea of Umar and Sharjeel
Sharjeel is in jail since January 28, 2020 and Umar since September 13, 2020 in the Delhi riots case. The Supreme Court rejected his bail plea, while granted bail to 5 other accused with 12 conditions. Not only this, the court has also barred both of them from filing new bail petitions in this case for the next one year. This has created anger among his supporters. Supporters are calling it injustice.
