What is news?
Cancer is a dangerous disease, in which the cells of the body begin to grow uncontrollably. No precise treatment of the disease has been discovered so far, but its risk can be reduced with the help of chemotherapy. A new study has been done in this episode, through which a special DNA test has been prepared. With its help, chemotherapy resistance can be detected in cancer patients.
Many institutions did this study together
To complete this study, scientists at the University of Cambridge have worked with the Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO) and Cambridge -based Startup Taylor Bio. For this, Cancer Research United Kingdom (UK) provided financial assistance. Scientists have developed a test that can successfully predict whether cancer will be able to resist chemotherapy treatment. Let’s understand this test in detail.
How does this test work?
This test works by seeing changes in the order, structure and number of copies of DNA inside cancer. It is known as chromosomal instability (CIN) signature. These signatures are found by reading the first DNA sequence of tumors and looking for a pattern of disintegration. The test may accurately estimate the resistance to the treatment of 3 general types of chemotherapy from the test. These include platinum-based, anthralcline and taxen chemotherapy.
Process
840 patients participated in this study
Data of 840 patients suffering from various types of cancer was used for the study. Through this, patients were classified as ‘chemotherapy resistant’ or ‘chemotherapy sensitive’. They were then sent for a different type of chemotherapy treatment to find out how much time it took to stop working. Through this, it became easier to predict patients’ reactions to chemotherapy.
What were the results of this study?
The study found that it was difficult to treat ovarian metastatic breasts and metastatic prostate cancer in patients where resistance to taxen chemotherapy was predicted. In patients with resistance to resistance to anthraculin chemotherapy, ovarian and metastatic breast cancer were difficult to treat. At the same time, patients in which resistance to platinum chemotherapy was predicted had higher treatment failure rate for ovarian cancer.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy contains many side effects
Chemotherapy is an effective treatment of cancer, but it can be toxic for cancer cells as well as healthy cells. Many side effects of this are also seen. However, scientists hope that this test will be used to estimate how effective all types of chemotherapy will be against different types of cancer. With this, they will be able to treat patients better.
