What is the news?
These days, about 15 OTT platforms in India are under the scrutiny of the government. According to the report of the Standing Committee of Parliament, allegedly illegal and objectionable content is being shown on these platforms. Taking this matter seriously, the Central Government has intensified the investigation, so that the content on digital platforms can be controlled and the audience can get safe and responsible entertainment.
Government blocked many platforms
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said that first 25 OTT platforms were blocked, after which action was taken on 18 more platforms. At present, investigation of 10 to 15 platforms is going on and new blocking orders are also being issued as per the need. The government says that strict steps will be taken against platforms that do not follow the rules, so that the digital space can be made safer and better.
Strict action taken on obscene content
In February, the ministry had shut down some platforms that violated the IT Rules 2021. They were accused of showing obscene and objectionable content. Even before this, similar action has been taken on many popular apps. The government is constantly keeping an eye on such platforms and is showing strictness against those who violate the rules, so that the quality of online content can be improved.
There is a need for strictness on fake content also
The report has also expressed concern about fake content and stated the need for a strong system to deal with it. PIB’s Fact Check Unit is working in this direction and many links have been blocked. The committee has suggested that the use of AI tools should be increased and more experts should be involved, so that fast and effective action can be taken on misinformation.
