On July 30, 2000, Dr. was staying at his farmhouse in Doddagajanur near Talawadi in Erode district. Rajkumar was kidnapped by Veerappan and his gang. He was kept as a hostage in the forest for about 108 days. This incident shocked the entire country.
A total of 14 people, including Veerappan, were named as accused in this case. However, in 2004, Veerappan, Sethukuli Govindan, Chandra Gowda and Sethumani were killed in a police encounter. Another accused named Ramesh has not been traced till now. The remaining 9, Govindaraj, Andril, Pasuvanna, Puttuswamy, Kalmandiraman, Maran, Selvam, Amritalingam and Nagaraj, were tried for a long 18 years.

This protracted legal battle ended in September 2018, in which around 10 judges were changed. On that day, the trial court had acquitted nine accused due to lack of evidence. Dissatisfied with this verdict, the Tamil Nadu government filed an appeal in the High Court in 2019. Now after five years, the High Court has finalized the lower court’s decision by rejecting the appeal.
