During the Bharat Bandh in Odisha, a major accident was almost averted at Siriguda Chowk in Rayagada. Amidst the demonstration, the brakes of a police bus suddenly failed and the bus headed towards the crowd. It was fortunate that no protestor was injured, but there was chaos at the spot.

According to information, a demonstration was being held by several trade unions on a busy road near Siriguda Chowk. Meanwhile, a police bus stuck in traffic suddenly went out of control and started rolling towards the protest site. The chairs placed there for the union leaders to sit were hit by the bus and broke. Although no one was injured in the incident, anger spread among the protesters.
Conspiracy to disrupt the bandh – labor leader
Labor leaders alleged that brake failure was not a normal incident but a conspiracy to disrupt the strike. After his statement the atmosphere at the protest site became more heated. The situation became tense for some time due to breaking of chairs and sudden stampede. The protesters started raising slogans and demanding action against those responsible. With traffic already affected in many parts of Odisha due to Bharat Bandh, this incident made the atmosphere more tense.

Questions raised regarding security arrangements and administrative responsibility
As soon as the information was received, senior police officers including SDPO and IIC of Rayagada reached the spot. He tried to calm the situation by talking to the protesters. After much persuasion and discussion, the situation was controlled and law and order was restored. At present, this incident has raised many questions regarding security arrangements and administrative responsibility during Bharat Bandh.
