Gangtok: Two earthquakes of magnitude 4.6 and 3.5 were felt in the northeastern state of Sikkim on Thursday. The first earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred at 11:24 am. According to the National Center for Seismology, the epicenter of the earthquake was four km north-east of Yuksom in Gyalshing district at a depth of 10 km. This blow was quite strong. It was also felt in areas like Gangtok, Namchi, Mangan and Pelling.

People took to the streets screaming out of fear

Panicked people came out of their homes and at many places people took to the streets screaming out of fear. After this, a second earthquake of 3.5 magnitude was felt in Mangan district at 12.17 pm. Its center was 11 km north-west of Gangtok at a depth of 10 km. At present there is no news of loss of life or property in both the earthquakes.

What to do in case of an earthquake?

  1. Drop, Cover and Hold On: As soon as you feel the shock, lie down on the ground, hide under a sturdy table or desk and cover your head with your hands. Stay like that until the jerking stops.
  2. Stay away from windows and heavy items: Avoid glass or falling objects to reduce the risk of injury.
  3. Don’t run out: Do not try to run out of the building, as there is a risk of falling out.
  4. Switch off electricity and gas: If possible, turn off gas and electricity after an earthquake to prevent a fire.
  5. Pay attention to tsunami warnings: If there is a possibility of tsunami in coastal areas, move to higher ground.
  6. Keep an emergency kit ready: Always keep water, medicines, torch and essential items ready.
