5 European countries including Britain accused Russia of poisoning Alexei Navalny

What is the news?

Five European countries, including Britain, have accused Russia of murdering opposition leader Alexei Navalny by giving him lethal poison. The countries making allegations also include France, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands. All of them allege that laboratory analysis has confirmed that Navalny was given a highly dangerous poison found in poisonous dart frogs before his death in prison. Let us tell you that Navalny died in February 2024.

Foreign ministries of the five countries issued a joint statement

A joint statement issued in London on Saturday by the foreign ministries of the five countries said that analysis of samples taken from Navalny confirmed the presence of epibatidine. The statement further said that epibatidine is a highly lethal poison found in poison dart frogs found in South America. This can cause immediate death of a person. This substance is not found naturally in Russia.

The five governments said in a joint statement that only Russia had the means, motive and capacity to carry out this attack in disregard for international law. He further said that they are reporting Russia to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for violating the Chemical Weapons Convention. If this complaint is made, the matter will be thoroughly investigated again.

Navalny was a vocal critic of President Putin

Navalny, President Vladimir Putin’s most vocal critic, has led anti-corruption campaigns and sparked major protests. He died in Arctic prison in February 2024. He was serving a 19-year sentence, which he said was politically motivated. Navalny’s wife Yulia Navalnaya had last year accused Navalny of being poisoned before his death. However, Russia had denied this.
