Several journalists, including a foreign journalist, were detained in the capital Caracas on Monday after the ouster of President Nicolas Maduro from power in Venezuela. All the journalists had come to Caracas to cover the march in support of Maduro and the swearing-in ceremony of the country’s new interim government. The Venezuelan Press Association reported that a total of 14 people were detained, who were later released.

A foreign journalist was deported

Venezuela’s National Press Workers Union reported that 11 of those detained were from international media organizations, and one was at a Venezuelan television network. The organization said that one of the journalists has been deported. China’s Foreign Ministry said that all Chinese journalists present in Venezuela are safe.

Journalists’ equipment was also snatched

According to the report, the journalists were detained by military intelligence officers and kept in the National Guard command post located in the Assembly building. The organization reported that their phones were confiscated and thoroughly searched, including contacts, conversations, voice notes, Instagram accounts, emails and documents. The National Association of Journalists reported that 21 Venezuelan journalists were arrested in the first 11 months of 2025.
