Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader KP Unnikrishnan passed away today at a private hospital in Kozhikode. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has expressed deep condolences on the demise of former Union Minister KP Unnikrishnan.

Was undergoing treatment for age related disease

Unnikrishnan was undergoing treatment for age-related ailments at a private hospital in the city. With the demise of KP Unnikrishnan, Kerala has lost one of the last representatives of the generation that saw Parliament not just as a stage of numbers, but as a theater of ideas.

Was a big face of Kerala politics

KP Unnikrishnan had achieved a position in Kerala politics which could not be easily categorized. A socialist by conviction, a long-time Congressman, a Union Cabinet minister during the National Front era and a staunch critic of dictatorship during the Emergency, Unnikrishnan’s political journey reflects the ideological turmoil of post-independence India.

Joined Congress Party in 1962

Unnikrishnan started his political career in the Socialist Party before joining the Congress in 1960. In 1962 he became a member of the Congress Committee, marking the beginning of his long association with national politics.

Know how many times he has been an MP

After being elected to the Lok Sabha from Vadakara in 1971, he represented the constituency several times in 1977, 1980, 1984, 1989 and 1991 and built a strong personal base that often transcended party boundaries.
