What is the news?

The impact of the ongoing war between Iran and Israel-America has now reached the kitchens of India. Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz, important for the supply of gas and crude oil. Due to this, gas supply has come to a standstill and there is a shortage of commercial gas in many states. Many states including Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan have banned the supply of commercial gas.

Half of Mumbai’s restaurants on the verge of closure

Mumbai Hotel Association India Today Told that about 20 percent of the hotels and restaurants are already closed and if the supply does not improve, half the hotels may be closed in 2 days. Many restaurants have shortened their menus. Restaurants are being opened for shorter hours to save gas. Restaurant owners claim that LPG supply has almost completely stopped since March 8.

Bengaluru: Many restaurants are cooking food on wood

Many hotels in Bengaluru have started cooking on stoves. Bengaluru Hotels Association has said operations across the city are likely to be affected from March 10. The association said that despite earlier assurances by the oil companies that the supply would not be affected for about 70 days, the sudden stoppage of supply is a big blow. Bengaluru’s iconic Breakfast Bhavan, famous for its breakfast, is also on the verge of closure.

Effect visible in Kolkata and Chennai also

“Commercial LPG distributors have completely stopped the supply of cylinders saying that they do not have stock available. Due to this, many restaurants have been forced to close,” the Chennai Hotel Association said in a letter to Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. At the same time, the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Eastern India said that till Monday some supply of LPG was being made, but since morning it has completely stopped.

What is the condition of the states?

In many cities of Uttar Pradesh, cylinders are not available even after 4-5 days of booking. 9,000 restaurants in Maharashtra are in danger of closure. The Municipal Corporation has closed gas crematoriums in Pune. In Madhya Pradesh too, there are reports of delay in delivery despite cylinder booking in many cities. In view of the wedding season, along with hotels, confectioners and marriage garden owners are also worried.

What is the government doing to deal with the crisis?

The Petroleum Ministry has formed a high-level committee of executive directors of 3 oil companies, which will review the supplies. To prevent hoarding, the cylinder booking period has been increased from 21 days to 25 days. To control the supply, the government has implemented the ‘Essential Commodities Act, 1955’ across the country. All oil refineries have been ordered to increase LPG production.
