Ahmedabad: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reached Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad and paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. Sabarmati Ashram, also known as Gandhi Ashram, was established by Mahatma Gandhi in 1917. It was the residence of Gandhiji from 1917 to 1930 and was one of the major centers of India’s freedom struggle. After paying homage to the Father of the Nation at the historical ashram, both the leaders reached Sabarmati Riverfront, where they inaugurated the International Kite Festival. Let us tell you that Frederick Merz has arrived on the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for an official visit to India on 12-13 January.

This will be followed by bilateral programs at the Mahatma Mandir Convention Center in Gandhinagar, where both the leaders will review the progress made in the India-Germany strategic partnership. The strategic partnership between the two countries has recently completed 25 years. Officials said Modi will attend talks between the delegations of the two countries at the Mahatma Temple in the evening, after which a joint press statement will be issued. The Ministry of External Affairs had earlier said that Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merij will also meet business and industry leaders and discuss issues of regional and global importance.

Many important issues will be discussed

PM Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will review the progress made in the India-Germany strategic partnership, which recently completed 25 years. Also, green ammonia, submarine deal, trade, investment, technology, education, skill development, defence-security, science and innovation will be discussed. A large business delegation has also come to India along with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, which includes chief executives of 25 big German companies. Let us tell you that Germany is the 9th largest foreign investor in India. India-Germany bilateral trade stands at $51.23 billion, which is about 25 percent of India’s total EU trade. In the year 2024-25, trade in services stood at $16.65 billion. Whereas from April 2000 to June 2025, FDI worth $15.40 billion came to India from Germany.

Talks can be held on defense deal

The biggest defense deal can also be finalized during the meeting between PM Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. This deal will be worth around $8 billion. This deal is being considered as a decisive step for India’s long running Project-75I. For this, now the Indian Navy has selected Type 214NG submarine weighing 2500 tonnes, which is equipped with air independent propulsion technology. In June 2025, an agreement was signed between the German company TKMS and India’s MDL, to cooperate in the construction of 6 stealth submarines in India. The partnership aims to combine Germany’s advanced submarine design and engineering expertise with MDL’s experience and existing shipbuilding infrastructure in India. TKMS will provide design, engineering and technical advice for the submarines, while MDL will manufacture and deliver these submarines in India. Completion of this deal will increase the strength of Make in India in the defense sector.

Eye on green energy deal

A deal on green energy can also be made during the meeting between German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and PM Modi. Germany is now looking towards India for its energy needs. German government company Uniper is preparing to buy green ammonia from India. Green ammonia is used to make green hydrogen. It is a clean and powerful alternative to fossil fuels. An agreement has already been signed with India’s Greenco Group. Under this, 2.5 lakh metric tons of green ammonia can be supplied every year. A final decision on this deal can be taken during Chancellor Merz’s visit.
