Chennai: DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran sparked debate by claiming that girls in northern states are often asked to stay at home and do household work. In contrast, Tamil Nadu encourages girls to study and pursue careers.
‘Not even allowed to do job’
Speaking to students at the Quaid-e-Millat Government College for Women in Chennai on Tuesday, Maran attributed the progress in women’s education in the state to the Dravidian movement and the policies of Chief Minister MK Stalin’s government. “Our girl students should feel proud. We want them to study,” she said. She further said that while some northern states prevent girls from working outside, they are not allowed to do jobs. At the same time, Tamil Nadu supports girls’ education.
