The Supreme Court has dismissed a plea filed by the Tamil Nadu government seeking a stay on Karnataka’s plan to build the Mekedatu Dam across the Cauvery River. The court said that the petition was filed prematurely and refused to intervene in the matter for the time being.
The Mekedatu project proposal is still under review by expert bodies. Several committees, including the Cauvery Water Management Authority, are deliberating on this. Thus, it is clear that the Court cannot interfere at this stage.

The main objective of the Mekedatu project is to provide drinking water to the capital city of Bangalore and generate 400 MW of electricity. However, Tamil Nadu’s main concern is that this project will reduce the amount of water flowing to them from the Cauvery river.
