New Delhi: The petition by Mamata Banerjee and other TMC MPs against the SIR process in West Bengal has been heard in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has ordered that the Election Commission, in consultation with the CJ of the HC, issue a notification in which an Appellate Tribunal should be formed comprising a former CJ and other judges.

This tribunal will hear those appeals whose applications are rejected by the judicial officer. The judicial officer will also give the reason for rejecting the application. The Election Commission will bear the expenses of the tribunal. Advocate Maneka Guruswamy, appearing for the state government, told the court that judicial officers have processed about 7 lakh cases. Total is 63 lakhs. About 57 lakhs are left.

What did the CJI say?

CJI said that the Chief Justice of the High Court has told today that 10 lakhs have been reached. Expressing displeasure, the court said that advance petition sends a wrong signal that you do not trust the system. How dare the petitioner file an application? How dare you question the judicial officers. The court is giving a strict warning regarding this.

Maneka Guruswamy said that we have not done this, questioning judicial officers is shocking.

CJI said that we will issue a notice of contempt on the application. We have to respond in the language they want.

CJI Surya Kant expressed his displeasure and said that a stage has come where we are doubting both the parties. We are doubting the veracity of both sides.

The Supreme Court said that the CJ of West Bengal High Court has informed today through a communication on March 10 that more than 10 lakh objections have been resolved. More than 500 judicial officers from West Bengal, 200 from Odisha and Jharkhand have been deployed and are working day and night.

The court asked the Election Commission to provide full logistical support to the Judicial Officer in fulfilling his responsibilities.

SC said that it has been told that necessary instructions have also been issued to the judicial officers and their leaves have been cancelled. What more sacrifices can we expect from our officers? I myself have experienced this during travel.

The Supreme Court directed the state government to provide all necessary facilities to the officers. ECI will not implement any such rule which will cause trouble. New login IDs will be created immediately as and when required by judicial authorities.
