How many voters were there in the country in 1952?
According to the first census conducted in 1951, India’s population was 361,088,090. Then there were a total of 173,212,343 registered voters. During this period, all citizens above 21 years of age were eligible to vote. The first Lok Sabha election was a big challenge for the country. In such a situation, 16,500 clerks were appointed on a 6-month contract to type and collect the voter list in this election. A total of 196,084 polling stations were set up for the elections.
What was the result of the election?
The first Lok Sabha elections in independent India were held for a total of 489 seats. According to the information, a total of 1,949 candidates took part in this election. When the results of the elections started coming out on 10 February, the Congress under the leadership of Nehru gained majority by winning 249 out of 489 seats in the Lok Sabha. When the final results of the election came out, Congress secured 45% of the votes and won 364 seats. The Socialist Party won 12 seats with 11% of the vote. Whereas, Kisan Mazdoor Praja Party got 5.79 percent votes and 9 seats. At the same time, Communist Party of India got 3.29 percent votes and won 16 seats. The remaining seats were won by other parties. With the victory of Congress, Jawaharlal Nehru took oath as PM.
