‘Husband will have to share the household work equally’, important comment of Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Friday said that the husband will have to share equally in household chores like cooking, cleaning the house and washing clothes because he has married his life partner and not a domestic help. The remarks were made by a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, which is hearing a petition challenging an order of the Karnataka High Court.

The High Court had canceled the order of the subordinate court granting divorce on the grounds of cruelty. During the hearing in the Supreme Court, the counsel for the petitioner argued that the mediation between the two parties had failed.

Both are living separately since 2019

The bench asked what was the alleged cruelty in this case? The lawyer appearing for the man (husband) said that the woman was behaving inappropriately and was not cooking food. Justice Nath said, ‘You have to participate equally in all these things. Cooking, cleaning the house, washing clothes, everything. Times have changed.

Both work in the same government school

Justice Mehta said, ‘You have not married any domestic help. You are married to your life partner. The bench was told that both of them (the couple) were serving in a government school. The bench said, ‘Both the parties should be called to the court. We want to talk to them.’The apex court scheduled the hearing of the case for April 27 and asked both the parties to be present in the court on that day.
