Some things to keep in mind while charging an electric car at home

What is the news?

On Wednesday (March 18), a house caught fire during electric car charging in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, due to which 8 people died. This incident highlights the carelessness and ignoring of rules during EV charging. If you also have an EV in your house, then it is important to keep some things in mind while charging, otherwise an accident can happen. Let us know which mistakes should be avoided.

charging point

Where should charging point not be installed?

In the incident that took place in Indore, the biggest mistake was in installing the EV charging point, which was near the gate outside the house. Experts say that charging points should never be kept outside the house. To charge the battery, a 3kw charger is used in homes. During charging, many times the wires of the point get heated due to direct sunlight. Apart from this, there is a danger of short circuit if water enters the trees and plants while watering them.

These precautions should be taken

If there is AC and EV vehicle in the house then there should be at least three phase connection. In single phase connection, there is a risk of wire heating and short circuit. Charging should not be done overnight. Charge the car battery in the evening, but switch off the charging point at night. Make a separate point for charging and keep a strong wire, because it gets hot during charging. The risk of fire increases.

Do not leave wires exposed

Along with electrical safety measures, install MCB in the house. Due to this, in case of short circuit, the electricity stops. The risk of fire spreading also reduces. Check the charging wire from time to time. Change them if they get hot. Many times we leave them in the open and rats gnaw their upper parts. Take special care of the quality of the charging equipment, because there is a risk of short circuit.

Avoid using third party charger

Do not use third party charger for EV charging, as there is a possibility of fire. The manufacturer’s charger is made to work with the vehicle’s battery management system, making charging fast and safe. Keep checking the charger wire frequently. If any defect is found then replace it. If using an extension board, check it as it may overheat.
