What is the news?
Billionaire Elon Musk’s company Space-X may soon launch its satellite internet service Starlink in India. The company has taken an important step in this direction with the Gujarat government. A Letter of Intent (LoI) has been agreed between the two to provide fast internet in remote and border areas of the state. Its objective is to connect those areas where till now network facilities have been very limited.
What is the scheme under LoI?
Under this agreement, there is a plan to provide satellite based high-speed internet in the tribal, border and backward districts of Gujarat, where there is lack of network. Common service centres, government schools, e-governance facilities, district disaster control rooms and some sensitive areas will be connected in the pilot project so that services can be expedited. Its main goal has been said to be to strengthen digital services especially in districts like Narmada and Dahod, so that the local people can get direct benefits.

Security, education and health will benefit
Starlink connectivity will provide better, faster and reliable network to police posts, disaster management centers and wildlife monitoring systems in the backward areas of Gujarat state. Along with this, online education will be promoted in schools and telemedicine services in primary health centers will become more easy and accessible. This network will continue to work even during bad weather or disasters, making security, relief and delivery of essential government services more reliable.
Forward Strategy and Working Group
To implement this scheme properly, a joint working group of Gujarat Government and Starlink will be formed, which will monitor the entire project. This group will work regularly on technical aspects, ground requirements and decisions related to future expansion. The LoI also includes providing better connectivity to industrial parks, highway safety systems, ports and coastal police operations, thereby further strengthening the digital infrastructure across the state.
