Sam Altman, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Artificial Intelligence (AI) company OpenAI, has advocated the adoption of ‘democratic AI’ approach in India, the world’s largest democracy. He described India as a potential ‘full-stack AI leader’ and announced plans to strengthen partnerships with the Indian government to expand the company’s presence. This announcement has been made ahead of the India AI Impact Summit 2026 to be held in New Delhi.

He said, “The company is committed to contribute to the development of AI in India.” Altman also emphasized on making his tools available for free, so that they are accessible to all Indians. Also revealed that there are approximately 100 million weekly active users of their tools.

Altman highlighted OpenAI’s recent initiatives in India, including a conference of leaders of over 200 non-profit organizations in 4 cities, where they were taught how to use ChatGPT. He inaugurated his first office in Delhi in August last year. Plans for further expansion this year were also mentioned. Altman will come next week to participate in the India AI Impact Summit. He indicated a partnership with the government.
