New Delhi: The Indian Army has acquired intellectual property rights (patents) for a new three-layer combat uniform. According to the Defense Ministry, ‘New Coat Combat’ has been designed and developed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Delhi, under the aegis of the Army Design Bureau. It is suitable for keeping the soldiers’ bodies safe in various climatic conditions as well as for their military activities. After being patented, there is no danger for those who copy it. He may also be sued.
Following the launch of the new Combat Uniform (Digital Print) in January 2025, the Indian Army has registered the design of the New Coat Combat (Digital Print) with the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, Kolkata under Design Application No. 449667-001, dated 27 February 2025.
Know the specialty of this uniform
This combat uniform is suitable for protecting the soldiers’ bodies in various climatic conditions as well as for their military activities. According to a statement, the new type of uniform (digitally printed) will prove to be another milestone in the direction of modernization, indigenization of the army and providing comfortable uniforms to the soldiers. The three-layer uniform uses advanced technical textiles and has an ergonomic design designed to improve comfort, mobility and operational efficiency in various climatic and tactical situations, officials said.
Patents will remain entirely with the Army
The statement said that the Indian Army has successfully registered the design of the new Coat Combat (Digital Print) with the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, Kolkata and it was published in the official journal of the Patent Office on October 7, 2025. The ministry said that with this registration, the exclusive intellectual property rights of both the design and pattern will remain “entirely” with the Indian Army.
What did the Defense Ministry say?
The Defense Ministry said that this registration provides legal protection to the sole ownership of the Army and against unauthorized manufacture, reproduction or commercial use by any unauthorized entity. “Any violation of these rights will entail legal consequences, including claims for injunction and compensation, as per the provisions of the Designs Act 2000, Design Rules 2001 and the Patents Act 1970,” the statement said.
The new type of uniform consists of an outer layer, an inner jacket and a thermal (warm) layer. The outer layer is made of digitally printed textile, designed for ease of operation and safety in various terrains. The ministry said the inner jacket is an insulating middle layer made of lightweight material, which provides warmth to the body. Whereas, the thermal layer is a base layer that maintains the balance of heat and moisture in extreme weather. (Input-PTI)
