What is the news?

Amidst the ongoing tension in West Asia, Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz, causing a global oil-gas crisis across the world. It was being told that Iran has closed this narrow sea route for all countries, but on Friday, Iranian Ambassador to Delhi Mohammad Fathali confirmed that India has been given safe passage. Fathali said this to journalists while leaving the program on the occasion of International Quds Day.

What did the Iranian ambassador say?

Journalists asked Fathali whether India had been given safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. To this, Fathali said, “Yes, because India is our friend. You will see it within two or three hours. We believe that Iran and India have common interests in this region. I can say, being the Iranian ambassador to India, that we hope that the Indian government will help us at various stages after the war.”

How important is Hormuz for India?

Due to the war, Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz, due to which America is angry. This is the reason why oil and gas prices have increased worldwide. Shortage of LPG has started appearing in India also. India imports 88 percent of its total crude oil needs and a large part of it passes through the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, about 20 percent of total global trade passes through Hormuz.
