Indian youth shot dead in Canada, third murder of this year in Toronto

A 37-year-old youth from Nelamangala, Karnataka has been murdered in Canada, sending a wave of grief across his family and the Kannada community. The deceased has been identified as Chandan Kumar. He was shot outside Toronto’s Woodbine Shopping Center on Saturday, February 7, 2026.

According to the Toronto Police Service, shots were fired at a parking lot near Rexdale Boulevard and Highway 27 at approximately 3:31 p.m. Saturday. Police reached the spot and found that Chandan Kumar had been shot. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he was declared dead shortly after.

Toronto’s third murder in 2026

The incident has been recorded as Toronto’s third homicide of the year 2026. The case is now being investigated by the Homicide and Missing Persons Unit. Police are appealing to the public if anyone has any information related to this incident to contact investigators at 416-808-7400 or submit information anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

Chandan Kumar’s family in Karnataka said that he was sitting in his car when he was shot at. Expressing deep grief, the family has appealed to the Government of India to make arrangements to bring his mortal remains to India as soon as possible for the last rites.

Chandan was working in L&T company

Chandan Kumar was working in L&T company by profession and was living in Canada for the last six years. According to relatives, he was actively involved in promoting Kannada culture even while living abroad. At present, the reason behind the murder is not clear and the investigation of the case is going on.
