India is updating its defense equipment on a large scale. Approval of Requirements (AoN) was granted for various proposals with an estimated cost of approximately Rs 2.38 lakh crore in a meeting chaired by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on March 27, 2026. For the Indian Army, air defense track system, armor piercing tank ammunition, high capacity radio relay, Dhanush cannon system and runway independent air surveillance system were approved. The air defense track system will provide real-time air defense control and reporting capability, while high capacity radio relays will provide reliable and error-free communications.
Dhanush cannon system
The Dhanush cannon system will enhance the artillery’s capabilities to engage targets at long ranges in all terrains, thereby increasing firepower and accuracy. The Runway Independent Aerial Surveillance System (S-400) will provide surveillance capabilities to Army units, while the Armored Piercing Tank Ammunition (AMRED PAERCING TAN) will enhance the lethality of the anti-tank ammunition.
S-400 missile system
For the Indian Air Force, proposals for procurement of medium transport aircraft, S-400 long-range surface-to-air missile systems, remotely piloted strike aircraft and refurbishment of Su-30 aero engine aggregates were approved. The induction of medium transport aircraft by replacing the AN32 and IL76 transport fleet will meet the strategic, tactical and operational air transport requirements of the services.
The S-400 system will counter enemy long-range air attacks targeting critical areas, while the remotely piloted strike aircraft will enable the conduct of offensive counter-offensive and coordinated air operations, as well as provide covert intelligence, surveillance and detection activities. Refurbishment of Su-30 aero engines and its aggregates will increase the service life of the aircraft and meet the operational requirement of the Air Force.
Heavy duty air cushion vehicles approved
Indian Coast Guard has been approved for Heavy Duty Air Cushion Vehicles (AON). These vehicles will be used for multi-role littoral operations including high speed coastal patrolling, reconnaissance, search and rescue operations, providing support to ships and transportation of personnel and material including logistics.
In the financial year 2025-26, AON has been approved by DAC for 55 proposals worth Rs 6.73 lakh crore. Additionally, capital purchase contracts have been signed for 503 proposals worth Rs 2.28 lakh crore in the current financial year. The volume of AONs sanctioned so far and the number of capital contracts signed are the highest in any financial year.
