After canceling the Indus Water Treaty, India is continuously taking strict action on Pakistan’s waters. Now in a major decision, the government has approved the Sawalkot Hydroelectric Project to be built on Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir. National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has invited bids from companies for this project on February 5. This is the first new project approved by the Central Government after the cancellation of the Indus Water Treaty.
The project can be completed in 9 years
news18 According to the documents, it has been said that the construction method and equipment have been selected with the aim that the project can be completed quickly. “The available work period in a year in the project area will be 12 months for all underground works and 12 months for surface works with full progress rate during non-monsoon period and 50 per cent during monsoon period,” the documents said. The project may take 9 years to complete.
What is Savalkot Hydroelectric Project?
The Savalkot Project is a hydroelectric project to be built on the Chenab River in Ramban, Reasi and Udhampur districts of Jammu and Kashmir. It will be constructed in 2 phases, which upon completion will generate 1,856 MW of power. This project was started in the year 1984. The project consists of a 192.5 meter high dam, an upstream small waterway, an underground power house and a system to reclaim water. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 31,380 crore.
2.22 lakh trees will be cut for the project
847.17 hectares of forest land will be used in the Sawalkot project. For this, more than 2.22 lakh trees will be cut. Of these, 1.26 lakh trees are in Ramban district. Under the project, 1,406 MW power will be produced in the first phase and 450 MW power in the second phase. The project will affect 13 villages and around 1,500 families in Ramban district. The project was given environmental clearance in October last year.

India is accelerating hydropower projects in Jammu and Kashmir
After the cancellation of the Indus Water Treaty, India is continuously accelerating hydropower projects on Chenab and other rivers of the valley. The government has directed to complete Pakal Dul and Kiru projects by December this year and Kwar project by March 2028. Pakal Dul Hydroelectric Project located in Kishtwar is the largest project in Chenab Basin. A 167 meter high dam is to be built on this. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2018.
