ISRO and European Space Agency have partnered for future missions

What is the news?

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has signed a new agreement with the European Space Agency (ESA) to strengthen their collaboration on Earth observation missions. The space agency said in the statement that ESA-ISRO will work on arrangements related to joint calibration, validation activities and scientific studies for Earth observation missions. Signed by ISRO Scientific Secretary M Ganesh Pillai and ESA Earth Observation Director Simonetta Cheli.

The alliance between the two became stronger

This new agreement builds on the decades-old partnership between ISRO and ESA, which began in 1978 and was renewed in 2002. Cheli stressed the importance of this collaboration for upcoming Earth observation missions, especially the FLEX (Fluorescence Explorer) mission. Indian space scientist Pillai said the partnership between the two agencies covers a wide range of areas including Earth observation, navigation, ground station support and human spaceflight cooperation.

What benefit will ISRO get from this?

The Scientific Secretary also mentioned the European Space Agency’s support for space missions like Chandrayaan and Aditya-L1 as well as collaboration through ISRO’s Deep Space Antenna facilities. He further said that it is expected to support joint scientific studies and calibration campaigns for Earth observation missions. Simonetta Cheli said this collaboration will play an important role in improving the understanding of plant biology and monitoring environmental changes from space.
