New Delhi: Justice Yashwant Verma has filed his reply before the parliamentary committee in the cash scandal case. He has put forward many arguments in his defence. Justice Verma has raised the question that if government officials failed to secure the crime scene, then why should they face impeachment?

According to sources, Justice Verma said these things in his reply before the parliamentary committee

  1. He was not the first person to reach the incident site.
  2. When the police failed to secure the spot, how can they be held responsible.
  3. The police should have taken the kind of action that is expected in fire incidents.
  4. The police present on the spot did not seal the site.
  5. Both police and fire brigade were present at the spot, but they did not take necessary action.
  6. There was no recovery of any kind from the spot.
  7. Now it is being said that cash was recovered from there.
  8. When he himself was not present at the spot nor was he a first responder, how could he be held responsible for not securing the place.
  9. At that time the venue was under the control of those who were present there, Justice Verma was not present at the spot.

According to sources, Justice Verma has raised questions on the ongoing impeachment process against him on these grounds. Let us tell you that Justice Verma had challenged the impeachment against him and the formation of a committee by the Parliament in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court had reserved the decision in this case after the completion of the hearing.

What is the matter?

This case is related to Allahabad High Court (formerly Delhi High Court) judge Justice Yashwant Verma. This matter came into limelight in March 2025 when there were reports of recovery of a huge amount of cash after a fire at his official residence in Delhi. On March 14, 2025, a fire broke out in a store room of the official residence of Justice Yashwant Verma at Tughlaq Crescent. The fire brigade and police, who arrived to extinguish the fire, found burnt and half-burnt bundles of Rs 500 notes on the floor.

The then Chief Justice (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna formed an in-house committee of three judges to investigate the matter. The Supreme Court Collegium had transferred Justice Verma from Delhi High Court to Allahabad High Court. In July 2025, more than 140 Lok Sabha MPs gave notice for his removal from office (impeachment). In August 2025, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla constituted a three-member parliamentary committee to investigate the allegations. Justice Verma has challenged the validity of the formation of the parliamentary committee in the Supreme Court.
