Gadag: Karnataka Lokayukta Police has arrested BJP MLA red-handed on corruption charges. The name of the BJP MLA who was arrested is Dr. Chandru Lamani, who is the BJP MLA from Shirhatti assembly constituency.

What is the whole matter?

Based on the complaint of Class-1 contractor Vijay Pujari, Gadag District Lokayukta Police laid a trap and arrested Chandru Lamani. Apart from the MLA, his 2 PAs Manjunath Valmiki and Gurunaik have also been arrested.

It is alleged that the MLA demanded a bribe of Rs 11 lakh in connection with the work of retaining wall of the Minor Irrigation Department and when Rs 5 lakh was being given as bribe, the Lokayukta police caught him red handed. The accused MLA and his two associates are being interrogated further.

The incident created a stir in state politics.

Prominent Scheduled Caste (SC) representative Chandru Lamani, who won the 2023 elections, is now under intense scrutiny as the incident reverberates across the state. The action was taken on the basis of a formal complaint by Vijay Pujari, a first-class contractor, who had accused the MLA of demanding a huge bribe of Rs 11 lakh. Lokayukta officials laid a well-planned trap targeting the wall construction project of the Minor Irrigation Department, where this illegal deal was allegedly going on. As soon as Pujari handed over Rs 5 lakh in cash during the sting operation, anti-corruption teams swooped in and caught Lamani red-handed, causing the entire deal to fail.

The high-profile arrest signals an uptick in anti-corruption campaigns in Karnataka and highlights fears of political interference in infrastructure projects. Lamani’s arrest, given his history of controversies and earlier allegations of misconduct, could lead to an internal review of the BJP and a legal battle. The Lokayukta police is continuing to investigate financial transactions and project records and promises comprehensive action to dismantle such networks and restore public confidence.
