Kerala: Interesting contest in Nemom, will BJP spoil CPM’s game or Congress will upset it?

Thiruvananthapuram: The campaign is in full swing in Kerala for the assembly elections to be held on April 9. Election campaign is also going on in full swing in Nemom constituency. There are 10 candidates in the fray in Nemom. The main contest on this seat is between BJP, Congress and the ruling CPM. Many independent candidates are also trying their electoral luck from here. While some regional parties are also in the election fray. Elections will be held in Kerala in a single phase on April 9 and the election results will be declared on May 4.

Tough competition will be seen in Nemom

Kerala minister V. Sivankutty is contesting on a CPM ticket from Nemom. He is also an MLA from here. The minister is contesting against former Union Minister and Kerala BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Advocate K.S. on Congress ticket. Sabrinathan is making the contest triangular. Future India Party and Socialist Unity Center of India (Communist) are also contesting from this seat.

Nemom is constituency number 135 of the Kerala Assembly. This seat is for general category. Nemom is a major assembly constituency of Kerala, falling under Thiruvananthapuram district. It is part of the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Congress candidate Dr. Shashi Tharoor won the Thiruvananthapuram parliamentary seat by defeating BJP’s Rajiv Chandrashekhar by a margin of 16077 votes.

Nemom’s electoral history

In the 2021 assembly elections, this seat was won by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) i.e. CPM. CPM’s V. Sivankutty defeated BJP’s Kummanam Rajasekharan by a margin of 3949 votes. He got 55837 votes, which was 38.24% of the total votes. BJP candidate Kummanam Rajasekharan got 51888 votes, which was 35.54% of the total votes. Congress candidate K. Muraleedharan stood third with 36524 votes (25.01%).

In the 2016 Kerala Assembly elections, BJP candidate O Rajagopal won the Nemom seat by a margin of 8671 votes. He received 67813 votes, which was 47.46% of the total votes. CPM candidate V. Sivankutty received 59142 votes (41.39%) and stood second. JDU candidate V. Surendran Pillai stood third with 13860 votes (9.70%).
