What is the news?
Meta is planning to launch 2 new smart glasses from Ray-Ban next week, which are specifically for glasses wearers. According to the report, these glasses will be sold with AsilorLuxottica SA. This will be the first time that the company will offer prescription support for its Ray-Ban series. According to reports, the new glasses will be available in rectangular and round shape options and can be sold through eyeglass selling channels.
CEO had indicated last year
The company’s chief executive officer (CEO) Mark Zuckerberg said earlier this year, “Billions of people wear glasses or contact lenses for vision correction, and I think we are living through a period that is similar to the advent of the smartphone.” He added, “It’s hard to imagine a world in a few years where the majority of glasses people wear aren’t artificial intelligence (AI) glasses.”
Other companies are also preparing
Meta has been the leading company in the smart glasses category, but the report also states that Apple is planning to start selling its first smart glasses without display or AR support from next year itself. ChatGPT maker OpenAI is also working on several new AI-powered products, which may also include smart glasses. The company has acquired former Apple designer Jony Ive’s startup IO Products.
