What is the news?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday visited ‘Yad Vashem’ in Jerusalem, the world’s largest Holocaust museum and memorial, on the second day of his visit to Israel. During this, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was also with Prime Minister Modi. Modi paid tribute to the Holocaust victims here and took rounds of the sacred fire. Modi also planted a sapling at the museum along with Israeli President Isaac Herzog. What is the importance of museums and monuments for Israel? Come, let us know.

Museum has been built in memory of 60 Jews

Yad Vashem was created in 1953 by the Israeli Parliament (Knesset). The purpose of creating this memorial-museum is to preserve the memory of the six million Jews murdered in the genocide by Nazi Germany and their allies during World War II, record their stories, and spread awareness to prevent such genocides in the future. It houses personal items, photographs, testimony, videos and artefacts related to the genocide and stores the names of more than five million victims.

What is special about Yad Vashem?

The museum and memorial are named ‘Yad Vashem’ in Hebrew. Its literal meaning is “memory and name”. This name is taken from the book of Bible (Old Testament). Yad Vashem, located on the Mount of Remembrance (Har Hazikron) in Jerusalem, covers approximately 45 acres. Its museum is a long, triangular concrete structure rising up the hill. It has light coming from the 200 meter long roof window, which is a symbol of hope. The museum is mostly underground.
