Politics is at its peak with the announcement of assembly election dates in Assam. Congress has suffered a big blow before the elections, senior party leader and Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi has resigned from the party. The Congress MP wrote in his resignation letter, ‘With extreme sadness, I am today resigning from all posts, privileges and primary membership of the Indian National Congress. Earlier he had warned the party leadership that if Lahorighat MLA Asif Mohammad Nazar is re-nominated in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, he may resign from the Congress. In a strong letter to AICC general secretary in-charge of Assam Jitendra Singh, Bordoloi had expressed “sorrow and anguish” over the alleged incompetence of the party leadership on the serious allegations related to Nazar.
The accused was welcomed as a hero
Nagaon MP Bordoloi had referred to the suo motu investigation conducted by the Assam Police, which resulted in the arrest and chargesheet of Imdadul Islam, whom he described as a close associate of Nazar. Bordoloi alleged that Islam was involved in the violent attack on him and his colleague Sibamony Bora in Dumdumiya, Dhing in April 2025, where around 20 armed men allegedly attacked them. According to Bordoloi, after being granted bail, the accused was given a “hero’s welcome”, which he said was organized by Nazar. Islam was later taken to Gaurav Gogoi’s residence and felicitated at an event on January 11, 2026.
Bordoloi is angry because of his eyesight
Bordoloi also claimed that the accused was seen sitting behind Gogoi at a party event in Morigaon the next day. The MP said he had opposed Nazar’s re-nomination in the screening committee meeting chaired by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. However, he alleged that at the Central Election Committee meeting held in New Delhi on March 13, committee member Imran Masood rejected his claims as “false and fabricated”. In the letter, Bordoloi also said that he has again submitted the evidence to the party’s central leadership and warned that if the matter is not addressed, he may have to leave the party. “I will continue the struggle to protect my dignity within the party,” he wrote.
